My granddaughter asked if I could pack her lunch on Friday “just in case.” She is seven. Her name is Ellie, and she was doing homework at my kitchen table when she asked for something that did not need a microwave. I thought she meant school lunch. Then she opened her backpack and showed me a plastic bag with one sleeve of crackers, four loose pretzels, and a pencil note that said SAVE FOR TOMORROW.
I asked who wrote it. Ellie said her mother did, but she was not supposed to show anyone because people would think Mom was bad at being a mom. Then Ellie looked at the bread on my counter and asked if she could take two sandwiches because one was for her little brother after daycare.
